Diversity Visa lottery presents a rare opportunity for people from selected countries to move to the U.S. in an annual lottery. The program, which has been around since the year 1995 has seen thousands of immigrants who are selected winners immigrate and also find jobs in the United States.
This type of visa aims to help diversify the number of immigrants that enter the country each year. The program works by selecting immigrants mostly from countries with very low immigration rates to the United States within the last five years.
So, countries with high rates of immigration to the U.S. have a slim chance of getting selected and not all countries are eligible for this type of visa. Each year over 55,000 people will randomly be selected to obtain a permanent residence permit in the United States.
Through this program which is sometimes called the green card lottery, families who ordinarily would not have any legal path to immigration will become eligible to obtain a green card.

The United States Immigration office will not mail you any notification letters nor send you an email and no list of selectees will be released by the U.S. Embassies and Consulates. You are to confirm your status only via the Entrant Status Check.
Once you have confirmed your status and it happens that you are selected, then you can proceed to fill and complete a DS-260 application to enable you to schedule an appointment for an interview with the immigration officer at the U.S. Embassy and Consulate. Please note that being selected does not automatically mean you will be issued a visa. You still need to meet the requirements that would make you eligible to receive a U.S. visa.
During the visa application process, you should make sure that your documents are valid and duly signed. If you are bringing your family or a family member with you, then you and your family member(s) will need to complete Form DS-260
