Develops and implements effective ways to promote Career Services to students, alumni and faculty, including the development of personal, internet and print resources. May assume lead role in team assignments, evaluations, and/or provide training to other employees and/or interns performing career services.

Within the Office of Career Services in the Division of Student Affairs, assists students, alumni and other designated clients in developing, evaluating and/or implementing career, educational and employment plans and decisions with an emphasis on assisting students and faculty to connect to opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Counsels students in the development of self-knowledge related to career choice and work performance by identifying, assessing, and understanding their competencies, interests, values and personal characteristics.
  2. Utilizes both formal and informal career development assessments with emphasis on relating appropriate career development assessment to population served.
  3. Through individual advising, coaching, counseling and/or group/class presentation, assists students/alumni in obtaining occupational information to aid career and educational planning, to develop an understanding of the world of work, and in selecting personally suitable academic programs and experiential opportunities that optimize future educational and employment options.
  4. Assists students/alumni in understanding the process required to gain experience through student activities, community service, student employment, research projects, cooperative education, internship and other creative opportunities, as well as assisting students/alumni in understanding and developing career decisions, graduate/professional school plans, employment plans, and/or job search competencies.
  5. Provides office hours to assigned college areas to provide student/alumni career counseling, and developing positive referral relationships with faculty.
  6. Develops and implements effective ways to promote Career Services to students, alumni and faculty, including the development of personal, internet and print resources.
  7. May assume lead role in team assignments, evaluations, and/or provide training to other employees and/or interns performing career services.
  8. Recognizes when counseling assistance is needed beyond the scope of career counseling and makes appropriate referrals to other university resources or off campus resources.
  9. May lead and/or guide other staff, either same or lower level, or student workers.
  10. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches in area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of career counseling theories, models, and techniques as they apply to life-long development, gender, age and ethnic background.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Assisting students with developing career choices by identifying, assessing and understanding competencies, interests, and values; b) assisting students by developing job search skills, and effective presentation skills through individual advising and/or group presentations; c) developing and implementing effective ways to promote Career Services to students, alumni, and faculty; and d) completion of Career Development Facilitator (CDF) Certificate within 6 months of hire into this position..

Conditions of Employment

  • Must attain Global Career Development Facilitation (GCDF) Certificate through the Center for Credentialing and Education within six months of hire into this position.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
